Essay 8

Atticus Finch and I are in some ways alike. Atticus finch is a very mild person, he is always handling problems in non violent ways. I like to try and be a mild person, I don’t like to start fights or get into arguments. Atticus Finch and I are very mild people.

(TS) Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird is a very mild
person. (SD)Reading books, lecturing his children, no matter what he is doing he is always very calm and peaceful never raising his voice for
any reason at all. (CM) Scout said he has only raised his voice once
when she was little. (CM)Even when in an argument with aunt Alexandra he stays very mild. (SD)Atticus can be mild at the most dangerous times of his life, when most people would fight or yell.(CM) When Atticus had to risk his life to defend Tom Robinson at the jail, He became very mild, facing the mob without violence. (CM) Also Atticus seemed very calm at the court when trying to defend Tom Robinson. (CM)Most people would have been nervous, but Atticus stayed very calm strolling to the windows during conversation. (CM)Atticus Finch is one of the mildest people I have read about.

I can become a very mild person almost the same as Atticus. Always talking quietly in the halls, trying not to interrupt any classes, I am always trying to be as mild as I can in most situations. Whenever I pass by a class in session, I sneak by trying not to distract the students. Also while in class I try not to interrupt the teachers. When most people would raise their voices, I try to use a monotone voice. For example if I were watching the super bowl and my team lost I would not become mad and start making excuses. I would not start yelling in celebration if I were to win. I am always trying to be calm and quiet, I like to try and be as mild as I can.

Mildness is the big reason Atticus and I are alike. We both try to be peaceful and be very kind. I never want to start violence and neither does Atticus. Atticus. Finch and I seem to be very mild people.

Hiding in a cage

By: Cole Blake

1/10/12

After looking at a bird in a cage and reading chapter 15 in To Kill a Mockingbird I realized there are few times in most peoples lives where they have had to hid and let their friends defend them. Just like Tom Robinson had to rely on Atticus and Mr. Underwood to defend him from a racist group. To me seeing a bird in a cage symbolized someone hiding in a protected area where no one could hurt them.

What the bird in the cage symbolizes to me reminds me of chapter 15 and my own life. This reminds me of chapter 15 because of Tom Robinson hiding in the jail cell fleeing from the group. He had to eclipse behind the walls of the jail from the racist gang who was trying to hurt him.  If not for him being secluded behind the walls of the jail he would have been hurt. Also Tom Robinson was hiding behind his friends, Atticus and Mr. Underwood. “You can just turn around and go home again, Walter” Atticus said to one of the men. This quote shows that even though Tom Robinson is black he still has friends who will defend him. This Bird also reminds me of my life because I’m sure there have been times where I have had to hide behind my friends who defended me. For example if someone said something mean to me my friends defended me and tell them to stop. I would do the same for one of my friends. I think chapter 15 was one of the best examples of what this bird means to me.

To me this bird symbolized the main part of chapter 15 and a few situations in my life. In chapter 15 this bid reminded me of the part where Atticus has to defend Tom Robinson. It also reminded me of having to have my friends back me up in school.  I am glad I saw this bird because it has given me lots of new ideas about chapter 15

Assesment #6

Today was our sixth visit to the boys and girls club. We started by doing team activites like making a line from smallest to tallest without talking or getting into arguements. This helped the kids because they were not good at working as a team and we had to help them with the activity. Some of the children got into arguements about hight so we had to calm by telling them that it did not matter and we could not talk in the game. Then we got to work and I helped Vinncent with his math homework. He had to do problems like 2038 + 288. I helped him with the math and how to do the problems. Then after everyone had finshed their work Vinncent wanted Quinlan and I to play checkers with him. He played against Quilan while I helped him with with the game. Their were times when he wanted to move to the left when he would have lost but I told him to move right and him won. I had fun this visit and am very exited for the next visit.

Assesment #5

Today was our fifth day visiting the boys and girls club. As usual we got there early so we played dodgeball with the kids. When we started to help the kids with homework most of the kids had little to none for some reason. So after going through all the kids to check if they wanted help most said they were done or did not need help. This was mainly because they only had english and that is always just to read and then right a small summery. Soon after I was called over by two young boys, Anthony and Vinncent to read a picture book about sharks. We learned about lots of sharks like the tigar shark. They had lots of fun and we shared many laughs. This was a good impovment in my relationship with the kids. This day was more of a visit to become more connected with the kids instead of helping them.

Assessment #4

When we got to the boys and girls club they were playing a game where there is a ball in the center of the room and you have to grab it and bring it back to your side before the other person tags you. This game should me that the kids are becoming a lot more welcoming of us. At some points when I was running with the ball my teamates would cheer me on yelling my name. This surpried me because last time we met they mainly called us "him or that guy". This made me feal that we were getting to know each other a lot better. When the homework started I helped the same cross eyed girl I helped last time. She needed to read a passege with a partner. seeing as she was very young she needed help with alot of the words. I think this visit imrpoved our relenship with each other greater.

Assessment #3

Today we visited the boys and girls club for the third time. We got there early so we played a game of octopus with the kids. When the homework time started I helped a small girl who was cross eyed with her english homework. She had to write words in future and past tence. Then she had to read through a paragraph and find mistakes. For example if the word "Then" was spelled wrong she would have to circle it. The kids there are becoming a lot less shy and are asking us for help more often. I am now starting to have much more fun going to the boys and girls club.

Essay 6

Then It Goes Back
Wavin Flag Relating to To Kill A Mockingbird
By: Cole Blake
12/7/11
In the song “Wavin Flag” there is a line that I think directly relates to the book To Kill A Mockingbird. This line is “And then it goes back”and I think it relates to Miss Maudie’s quote “Don’t worry about me, Jean Louise Finch. There are ways of doing things you don’t know about.”. I think there are three main ways that the song could possible relate to this quote.

(T.S)Sitting there thinking about a quote from the from the song “Wavin Flag”, “And then it goes back” did not mean a lot to me but after reviewing it thoroughly I realised it meant a lot more then I previously thought . (S.D)For one, it has a lot to do with sports. (CM)When playing a sport like football or soccer you have to try to score. (CM)When you do you feel great, but then the other team will score right after and take away your former renown.(SD)The same thing happens when you try hard, the other team will try even harder. (CM)This quote could also refer to my life. When I am working on math homework and finally finish the problem I will realise I made a mistake and have to redo the whole problem. (CM)Also, when cooking things, if you forget an ingredient you will have to remake the whole meal. (CS)I am so glad i took the time to ponder over this quote because now i know a lot more about the song.

(TS) A quote from To Kill A Mockingbird relates a lot to this line from “Wavin Flag”. (SD)The quote reminded me a lot about hope and how you need it after the other team scores and lets you down. (CM)I think she means hope because scout is only a little girl and does not understand much about having hope. (CM)Miss Maudie will need hope after watching her house burn to a crisp. (SD)Miss Maudie’s quote also reminded me of my life when I need hope. (CM)Although my house has not burnt down I still have had times where I needed hope. (CM)For example, when I get sick i need to hope that I get better so I do not miss any more school. (CS)Miss Maudie’s quote made me think about how we all need hope at some point in our lives.

I think this line can easily relate to Miss Maudie’s quote in many ways. A lot of this quote has to do with hope, so does the song “Wavin Flag”. I also think it has to do with sports and soccer. “Wavin Flag” was the song for the 2010 world cup and has a lot of lines relating to soccer. There are so many ways this quote and song can relate to each other.

Assesment #2

Today was my 2nd day at the Boys and Girls club. This time Marcus happend to be at the same school as us. The gym were we were previously was being taken by a meeting. We were located in the libary instead. For the first 20 minutes We helped a little girl with a crossword puzzel whitch surrprisingly was very difficult. After helping the rest of the chlidren we drew chrismas pictures with them for about 20 minutes. I felt better then I did after the last visit because I helped more kids and also got to know them better. I helped a little boy with his math homework, helped a girl with her soduku puzzel and much more. I am so exited for the next visit i had lots of fun helping these kids.
